In the meantime Robert W. Slocum, commissioner of the Division of Litter Control, has hinted darkly that if the bill passes, the industry might withdraw its support of the present law and the tax program which sustains it.
This is another bit of nonsense.
There is nothing mutually exclusive about either the present public education approach to litter control or the proposed bottle bill. In fact they would complement each other perfectly.
What is really needed, however, is a willingness on the part of the beer and soft drink industries to shoulder some of the responsibility for cleaniug up their owrn garbage.
After all, they make the profit from it.
If they really want to Keep Virginia Beautiful, they should be the first in line to support Sen. Marye’s excellent bill.
