Having made these exceptions we settled ten categories of human relationships or dependency in which trust is important:
1. Judgment in court. (
2. Religious counsel and inspiration.
3. Communication of news, events, ideas.
4. Personal security as the ultimate element of national defense.
5. Protection and preservation of the environment,
the world. ^
6. Certainty about food, including consumer protection.
7. An assured, safe, and adequate supply of water and other liquids.
8. .Care of children, of the aged, the sick, or of cherished possessions, including one’s house.
9. The important matter of the automobile, purchase, operation, and repair.
10. Privacy, and confidence, in the care of one’s messages, gifts, and the like, when in transit.
In each of these ten fields of testing, one Rappahannock resident was entered.
In the first test categ&ry, the judicial one, the basic question asked was “Whom would you like to have as a judge if you were brought into court?” The easy winner was retired Judge Rayner Snead, who ran well ahead of other judges, including Chief Justice Warren Burger and Watergate Judge John Sirica. The poll showed that generally Judge Snead was first choice because of his record in settling inter-family feuds, approaching in intensity the Hatfield and McCoy relationship in some cases, and, beyond that of settling intra-family feuds, which can be even more serious.
