The vote on the proposed index salary scale ended in a tie at uesday’s school board meeting, with Nancy Reeve and Beverly Massie voting for 'the adoption of the scale and Nelson Lane and Robert Eastham voting against it. Randall Updike, Hampton District member, was not present.
Board chairman Massie alloted time for each member to speak for or against the motion, framed at the board’s December meeting. The question before the board was: the Rappahannock school board approves the adoption of an index salary scale for all employees for ^he 1983-84 school year.
The index salary scale provides regular step increases from the first year of service up to the sixteenth year, with all. salaries presented as percentages of the base, or beginning salary. The proposal before the board has been sought by Rappahannock teachers for three years and by the current school board administration.
Richard Smith, president of the Rappahannock Education Association, a teachers’ group, told the board that the proposal had the full support of the association and had received only support from nonassociation teachers.
