Rappahannock’s firefighter of the year for 1982 has smoke in his blood.
Carl James, who received his award at the county Fire and Rescue Association-’s annual party Friday night, is the son of Lester “Brax” James. “My father was a volunteer with Amissville for almost as long as I can remember. He was chief for eight years. I doubt if I would have kept up my involvement without his leadership and example,” James said. “He and Paul Poling Vamd the county’s (fire an\l rescue) association and the fire school. I just more or less followed in his footsteps.”
Brax James left a big pair of boots but his son fills those boots admirably. He’s been a volunteer with the Amissville company for 16 years. “Since I was 13 years old and a junior firefighter,” Carl added. He’s held every position f^fcii lieutenant to assistant chief and currently is president of the community's fire and rescue unit and captain of the rescue squad. James is one of three
