A farmer who was born and raised in Rappahannock, James served a four-year stint as a paid firefighter with Chesterfield County where he advanced to the position of sargeant in a truck company. Although he lived in the Richmond area from 197781, he maintained his involvement with emergency service work back home, commuting to the annual fire school and other fire and rescue activities.
The award for firefighter of the year is sponsored by Col. Ottie Rawls, a former member of the Chester Gap Volunteer Fire Department. Each of the county’s six companies nominates an individual and the winner is chosen by the Rappahannock Fire and Rescue Association’s board of directors.
