animals brought into Healthl Department offices, even road kills and suspected carriers that have been in contact with domestic animals or livestock.
The four counties of Fauquier, Loudoun, Fairfax and Prince William accounted for 90 percent of the rabies cases confirmed in the state in 1982.

Rabies outbreaks in the 1960s and 1970s were confined primarily to foxes, Grayson said in the threepage letter which went out to local governments in eight counties. In that animal, the disease tends to burn out quickly because foxes become ill and die very soon after becoming infected. Raccoons, which account for 90 percent of the cases in the current epidemic, may have an incubation period longer than 90 days, while skunks, the other predominate carrier in the current epidemic, have an even longer incubation period, Grayson reported. Both tend to shed the virous for longer periods of time before becoming noticeably ill, he added.
