skunks infected with the virus appear to survive the infection, rabies is expected to persist in the area’s wild animal population for an extended period, the health official concluded.
According to Grayson, there is no effective method known for controlling the spread of the disease in wild animals. There is no evidence that trapping programs help and no vaccine approved for use in wild animals.
As a barrier against human infection, health officials recommend vaccination of all pets dogs and -eitS. Dr. James B. Kenley, state health director, has proposed that all localities experiencing a serious wildlifojrabies problem adopt an ordinance requiring cats, especially household cats, to be immunized against rabies. “This recommendation could be made for your locality in the future,” Grayson noted in his December 20 letter to the Rappahannock supervisors.
He added that the Virginia Code requires localities to bear the expense of treating a person bitten by a rabid animal in that locality, up to a total of $500, approximately the current perperson treatment cost. Recently, ten individuals had to undergo treatment in Loudoun County as the result of exposure to one rabid cat. The County’s cost for that episode was very nearly $5,000 Grayson reported, concluding with a suggestion that the supervisors discuss the rabies problem with Dr. Robert Einarson, local Health Department director.
The rabies immunization clinic set for January 22 from 11 a.ni. to 12 noon is for dogs only. Cost is $3.50.
The treasurer’s office will, be open from 11 a.m. to 12 noon as well so that dog tags may be purchased.
