A recent Newsweek article (12-27-82) on the Bible has turned the belief in a divine destiny for the United States into a “myth”, raised the P.R. hype about the Puritans to the level of “reality”, and somehow overlooked the fact that America was first settled in Virginia. . .where First Amendment freedom of religion and democratic government came from. . .by Bible toting English people.
The Puritans exist in history as a bad job. Thanksgiving Day should remember the banishment of Anne Hutchenson, the hanging of Mary Dyer, and the genocidal war against the Indian tribe of “Prince Phillip”. . .ungraced by anything like Virginia’s Pocahontas-Rolfe solution.
