The RCHS Varsity Cagers captured first place in the Bull Run District by first dethroning the Strasburg Rams, 70-66, last Friday and then shooting down the Stonewall Jackson Generals on Tuesday, 70-55. The Panthers are now 4-1 in district play and 8-3 overall.
Rappahannock commanded an early 4-2 lead in the opening minutes of play against Strasburg, but tight officiating coupled with accurate foul shooting by the Rams kept them in the game,, and after the Panthers missed some easy shots SCHS took a 19-17 first quarter lead. The Panthers’ shots continued to fall short of the mark in the second quarter and Ram Bryan Moser converted on six straight tosses from the charity stripe to give his team a 28-19 advantage. Strasburg’s luck seemed to improve when Rapp’s two big men, Mike Leake and Tom Sisk, were assessed with three fouls apiece. But if the Rams were expecting things to get any easier, then they sure must have been suprised when the Doyle Dunn brigade went into action. In a minute and a half of play Dunn tallied five points, two steals, and three rebounds, tying the game at 34 all. Strasburg recovered from shell shock in lime to hit one bucket and lake a 36-34 margin into the locker room.
In the third quarter of action, Panther Robert Myers connected on a three point play to give Rapp its first lead since early in the first quarter, 46-45. A strong panther defense helped retain the edge and go into the final quarter ahead, 49-47.
