Myers warded off the Ram attack when, with a minute left to play, he sunk two free throws and increased the Panther’s advantage to 67-64. The Rams came back with 30 ticks left on the clock, pulling to within one. 67-66. Then Doyle Dunn was tapped for a charge and a technical foul two seconds later and Rappahannock fans held their breath as a Ram stepped up to the foul line. He missed.
Another Strasburg opportunity came with 8 seconds left. A Ram stepped up to the foul line once again to shoot a one-and-one. Again he missed and Jeff Porter grabbed the rebound, was fouled and hit his first toss. Tom Sisk delivered the “coup de grace” when he grabbed the rebound and layed it in for a 70-66 Rappahannock victory.
Coach Dawson was very pleased with the play coming off of the bench, especially from Doyle Dunn. Dawson said Dunn had his best game of the year with 14 points and excellent defense, defense that has been important to the Panthers in their last two games. Dawson was disappointed with his team’s 23 turnovers. “Defense won the game,” he concluded.
Mike Leake and Robert Myers paced the Panthers with 15 points apiece. Leake also had 16 rebounds and Myers had five assists and three steals.
Panthers Trounce Generals
Rappahannock secured a firmer hold on first place Tuesday night with a surprisingly easy victory over the Stonewall Jackson Generals, 70-55. The loss toppled the Generals front a share of the ^ first place spot in the District.
