While Rappahannock County seems to be in the grip of a severe influenzalike epidemic, no specific flu virus has been identified as yet, according to Dr. Jerry Martin of the Rappahannock Clinic.
“In addition to the whole winter assortment of colds and other illnesses, we’re seeing a sickness that attacks adults as well as children with a high fever, a cough and the aching associated with a fever,” Martin said. “It seems to run its course in 3 or 4 days.”
“This is not a real problem in a healthy person,” Martin continued, “but it can be with someone with underlying 'heart disease. There’s also the risk of complications, mostly pneumonia, seen after the sickness strikes.”
Martin said that the clinic had not been alerted as to the type of flu or even been told that there was influenza epidemic locally. “But I would guess that this is a flu - most Drobably a ‘Type A” flu.” Martin explained that the term flu - or influenza refers to a very specific type of virus.
