Despite a request from the court for information on what the county proposes to do to solve its jail problem, the Rappahannock supervisors balked Monday at giving assurances that the jail will be renovated to meet Department of Corrections’ standards, with or without financial assistance from the state.
In a letter dated January 11, Circuit Court Judge Shore Robertson noted that he’d recently read in the Rappahannock News of the funding difficulties the supervisors were experiencing regarding the solution to Rappahannock County’s jail situation. “As I continue to be concerned about this serious problem, I would appreciate the Board advising me as to your proposed solution,’’ Robertson wrote. “Each day Court is held there is a potential need for a jail facility and its nonavailability necessarily ef fects the process of justice in Rappahannock County.”
“It seems to me we’re going to have to put the money out for the jail even if we’re not reimbursed by the state,” Supervisor Hubert Gilkey maintained.
