ona place tournament team will join RCHS on the road to the state championship. Winning the district tournament may be just icing on Rapp’s cake but as point guard Robert Myers put it, “We are on a roll and I’m sure we’ll get our dessert, too!”
The 1982-83 Panthers also broke the record for most wins by an RCHS basketball team when they upped their mark to 14-4 with the defeat of the Generals.
Mike Leake opened up the game with the first bucket after 30 seconds to give Rapp a mortal lock on the lead which they held the rest of the contest. The first quarter was not a pretty sight with a run-and-gun type offense that failed to help either team. At the end of the quarter the Generals had hit only three out of 22 attempts while Rapp connected on four of 14. The Panthers ended the quarter with the upper hand 11-17.
After tiring the Generals, the RCHS squad abandoned the reckless pace for a more controlled offense. With assistance from Leake and Doyle Dunn Rappahannock led 15- 7 with 6:40 left in the first half. Pops Aylor finished the half off with a jumper from the baseline for a 28-17 lead. Mike Leake had 13 points to lead the Panther attack and The Generals leading ace Kevin Moomaw managed only four against the Panther defense.
Stonewall began the third period by running off ten un-answered points, cutting a 40-20 Panther lead to within ten, but a gliding Robert Myers layup at the buzzer extended Rapp’s margin to 44-32 going into the final eight minutes of play.
