Although state binding for Rappahannock County’s jail was still not a sure thing this week, chances of getting state money were improved when a House committee recommended Sunday that the state reimburse the county for half the cost of jail renovations.
At the request of Delegate Raymond R. “Andy” Guest (R-Front Royal), the House Appropriations Committee recommended that the state reimburse the county for $81,500 of the estimated $163,000 needed for renovation of the jail. Rappahannock County would pay the other half.
But the Senate Finance Committee’s suggested budget amendments excluded money for Rappahannock’s jail. Both the House and the Senate are scheduled to take up their own committee’s amendments on Wednesday.
Guest said Monday that he planned to contact Sens. Nathan H. Miller (R-Rockingham), who represents Rappahannock, and William A. Truban (R-Shenandoah), who serves on the Finance Committee, to see if money could be added to the Senate Committee’s suggested budget amendment.
