and-a-half years for breaking and entering, petty larceny and credit card theft, is serving time in Shenandoah. Clarence “Pete” Martin has been incarcerated most recently in Warren County while awaiting trial on arson charges, set for this week. Dick Grigsby is in Culpeper jail after having 14 months probation revoked. “He’s about ready to get out.” the Sheriff noted. “He’s eligible now for parole.”
Shenandoah and Culpeper are both keeping Rappahannock’s prisoners without charge but Warren County bills the county $20 per day. On Monday, the county supervisors approved payment of $1,366 to the Front Royal facility, the cost of holding Martin for 68 days. Previously, the accused arsonist was jailed in Fauquier but Buntin said that officials there asked that he be moved due to lack of space.
Under Virginia law, the board of supervisors is responsible for providing a county jail and can be compelled by the circuit court to erect and repair a facility that meets state Department of Corrections’ minimum standards.
