Martin recommended that older people or those with heart disease, emphysema, or some other respiratory impairment, consider flu shots. He said that he’s hospitalized several people and that nearby hospitals are full of patients suffering from complications of the flu.
For those who are not at risk, Martin advises rest, lots of fluids and aspirin to control fever. “This is an occasion when I would advise people not to stay in bed longer than the fever forces them too,” he said. “Moving around, sitting up, very mild exercise helps to ventilate the lungs and lessen the possibility of pneumonia.”
