He added that Loudoun, Prince William and several other metropolitan jurisdictions have recently enacted ordinances which require cats to be innoculated.
Chairman J. R. Latham maintained that owners willing to have their pet cats innoculated will probably do so without an ordinance if alerted to the rabies threat.
“Particularly if you can stress how serious it might be with children,” Supervisor Clarence Baldwin added, asking about immunization for humans.
Men and women in high risk work such as professional trapping are advised to take a three-shot pre-exposure series, Einarson said. “It gives a fair amount of immunity but if you’re bitten by a rabid animal, you need to get two boosters.” The pre-immunization series, administered intra-dermally, costs $27, he said, while the six shot series given intra-muscularly after exposure to the disease carries a $500 price.
With no further response from the supervisors, the health director warned that the current rabies outbreak “will stay with us many years.” To end the outbreak, “we would practically have to wipe out the entire raccoon population.”
Range Amendment
By unanimous vote, the supervisors agreed to advertise for public hearing a zoning ordinance amendment which would allow shooting ranges by special permit in agricultural zones.
