“My main priority is to get the jail and dispatch center off the ground,” announced new Sheriff John Henry Woodward after taking office last week. “Other things I want to do will have to be worked in later. I have two untrained men now and that limits what we can try out.”
Hirings, promotions and arrangements for training were the first order of busiless when the former deputy assumed the pbst of sheriff.
The State Compensation Board waived the current six-week freeze on hiring replacements, authorizing Woodward to immediately fill the deputy slot left empty after his election. Joining the force on January 14 will be Troy Steele, 22, of Culpeper. A graduate of ; Culpeper County High 'School, Steele attended Gert manna Community College and was formerly employed bv the town ofCulpeper. .
The Compensation Board, which authorizes positions and pays salaries for law enforcement personnel, also approved employment of three new correctional officers for the recently renovated Rappahannock jail. Woodward has hired Mitch Hitt, 29, of Castleton, an RCHS graduate active in *fche Castleton Volunteer Fire Department, and WiJliarrf Jenkins, 21, a native of Rappahannock and graduate of Culpeper County High School formerly employed by the Culpeper Sheriffs Department as a part time jailer.
