His gift comes after more than two years of planning and work bv the Foundation to establish and preserve the site its the permanent home of the Virginia Gold Cup steeplechase races and several other non-profit major international class events in the Washington area requiring large turf space. The project has been seen as an alternative to commel'cial development for use of farm land.
Located about 45 minutes from downtown Washington between Routes 66 and 17, Great Meadow is being designed to comfortably handle-traffic and parking 'fer^up to 10,000 cars, together with facilities for future television network sports coverage of steeplechasing, three day events and similar colorful field sports.
The first event at the site will be a major new American steeplechase event, the Great Meadow Races, next October 20th. The Virginia Gold Cup will run its last meeting this coming May at Broadview near Warrenton and move to Great Meadow in 1985. ,
