All Will Be Women
Woodward noted that he now has a request before the Compensation Board for approval of three dispatchers. “When those positions are approved, all the people hired for the jobs will be women and they’ll all double as matrons. Ninety-five percent of the prisoners we’ll be holding in this jail will be male so I had to hire male jailers. Hiring female dispatchers will give us backup staff as matrons whenever we have women prisoners,” Woodward explained.
If the dispatchers aren’t authorized by the Compensation Board, the jail won’t open, Woodward emphasized. He maintained that an earlier proposal to have dispatchers double as jailers is completely unrealistic. “There’s no way we can operate a jail with the jailer running back and forth to answer emergency calls at the dispatch center. The jailer is going to be a fulltime job — and then some,” the sheriff said.
Woodward is anticipating approval for his personnel request from the Compensation Board and expects the dispatch center to begin handling all emergency calls beginning February 1. “All the equipment is installed and working except the fire and rescue phones,” he said, adding that the lines will be hooked up later this month.
After February 1, for police, fire and rescue — emergency only —Rappahannock residents in Amissville, Washington, Castleton, Sperrvville, Woodville and Flint Hill (987, 937, 675 and 547 exchanges) will call 9878525. Residents of Chester Gap and Huntly (635 and 636 exchanges) will call 635-4888 for police and fire and rescue ’■ in an amergency.
