Continued from Page 1 disgruntled with the choices made by the trustee electors, mounted a petition drive and had the question of school board selection placed on the ballot for a special election. Virginia law allows only two methods of school board selection: appointment by the trustee electors or appointment by the board of supervisors. By a lopsided margin of tento-one, voters opted to change Rappahannock’s system to the current appointment by the board of supervisors.
It is the practice of the supervisors to ask the board member in whose district the vacancy occurs for a nomination. That member’s choice has never failed to win endorsement, although support has not always been unanimous, as was the case when Lane himself was reappointed to the School Board two years ago.
