If a substantial layer of ice is expected to accumulate from the freezing rain, a winter storm warning is issued. It has been estimated that an evergree tree 50 feet high with an average width of 20 feet may be coated with as much as five tons of ice during a severe ice storm.
Sleet is small particles of ice, usually mixed with rain. If enough sleet accumulates on the ground, it will make the roads slippery. Travelers’ advisories are issued when ice and snow are expected to hinder travel but not seriously enough to require warnings.
Stormbound at Home
Living in a rural area, residents must prepare to be self-sufficient at home for extended periods. It is advisable to be able to survive for a week or two in case a storm isolates people, making it impossible for them to leave.
Keep an adequate supply of heating fuel on hand and use it sparingly. Regular supplies may be curtailed by storm conditions. If necessary, conserve fuel by keeping the house cooler than usual, or by “closing off” some rooms temporarily. Also, have available some kind of emergency
