After Clarke, Rappahannock had to prepare for the Strasburg Rams, ranked fifth among the state’s single “A" schools. But the Panthers showed how unimpressed they were by the pollsters as they downed the Rams, 84-75, before home fans last week.
Playing emotionally charged basketball, the RCHS squad rolled to a 6-0 lead before the Rams got on the board. The defense held the Strasburg scorers in check as the Panthers upped the difference to eight, 2113, at the close of the first period.
The second quarter brought more of the same. The Rams who were ranked fifth in the state apparently didn’t bother making the trip to Sperryville. Guard Jeff Porter went to Mike DelGrosso twice using the exact same play on consecutive trips down court to score four against the sleeping Strasburg defense and give Rapp a 12 point advantage. The Rams trimmed that to eight at the half and then mounted a drive of their own when play resumed. The Rams came back to within four, the closest they would get, and appeared to have momentum1 on their side. But the Panthers wouldn’t be denied. Baskets by Tommy Jenkins and Clarence Pendleton moved RCHS back up by eight and reclaimed , momentum for the hqmgleam.
The fourth quarter was all Rappahannock at both ends of the court. The Panthers’ dominance pushed the Strasburg coach into losing his poise which cost him a two shot technical. Rob Brown made one of the free throws and then swished a long distance jumper to make it 65-50. Playing his best game of the year. Brown scored again to give the Panthers their biggest advantage, 67-50.
The Rams tried to hold their embarassment to single digits, shaving off a few points from the margin in the closing minutes and tossing up a last shot with 24 seconds left to end the contest at 84-75.
