The cheer “We’re Number One!” is already echoing through Rappahannock County High School as the Panthers begin their run for a repeat performance as Bull Run District’s basketball champs.
After a disappointing start to the season with four losses against non-district foes, the Panthers swung into high gear just before Christmas break and they’ve been cruising ever since. After defeating George Mason, Clarke and Strasburg, ranked fifth preseason in Virginia’s single “A” division by the Roanoke Times, the Panthers hold the number one slot as the only undefeated Bull Run team in district play.
The first victory came on December 22 against George Mason as the RCHS boys gave coach Doyle Dawson an early Christmas present. The Panthers dominated the entire game, allowing the Mustangs to take the leuii only twice and both times by a single point.
Tommy Jenkins exploded to put the Rapp machine in motion, scoring six points. RCHS and George Masonthen traded baskets to makfit 13-10 at the first period buzzer.
