Investigations
Ranking right behind his first priority of getting the jail and dispatch system operating, Woodward’s “basic concern” is finding more time for investigations. “We’ve already lengthened our day. Shifts start now at 7 a.m. and run to 3 p.m. so we can provide traffic control at both schools,” the sheriff noted. “We’ve heard nothing but compliments on that arrangement.”
To achieve his goal of improving the clearance rate on breakings and enterings. Woodward hopes to send deputies to training sessions on investigatory techniques at the Central Shenandoah Academy. “There’s some addition schooling that I feel the men should get. I can’t afford to send somebody to every school that comes along — we don’t have enough staff. But in addition to learning more about investigating, I’d like for all the deputies to become qualified on the breatholizer (used to check suspected drunk drivers). We’ll leave the traffic schools to the State Police.”
And as soon as^-the new sheriffs department offices in the renovated jail are set up, the new sheriff plans to spend time in the field himself, concentrating on follow up investigations of crime. “Solving breakings and enterings is our weakest spot and it’s because the department has had a problem finding time to follow up on calls,” Woodward noted.
