The Rappahannock Panthers ended their at-home win streak Monday night as a young Manassas Park team pulled off an upset for only their third victory of the season.
The Cougars start a lineup of three freshman and two sophomores, which would seem like a mismatch against the more experienced Rapp veterans. “But they wanted to win more than we did and they put out 100 percent. We didn’t,” said coach Doyle Dawson.
The Panthers commited careless turnovers, allowing Manassas Park to jump to an early 2-6 lead. Then they seemed to find their game and with a bucket from Tom Sisk ended the quarter on top, 18-13.
A cold snap, colder than the winter chill outside, hit RCHS in the second quarter. Clarence Pendleton, who sank two baskets, was the only Panther to hit from the held. Mike DelGrosso chipped in a free throw to bring the second quarter total to an embarassing five points. Still, the home squad led by one at the half, 23-22.
