Ski Area manager Russ Albert said more than 1,650 skiiers were on the slopes over the weekend and that snow conditons remained excellent.
Rappahannock Supervisors were upset by a report that fire roads were blocked near Mount Marshall. The road, which was said to have been built originally as a trail to haul apples down from the mountain, had been a favorite for 50 years for hikers and horseback riders in the county.
The board received a resolution from the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection seeking to make “access and egress of the Shenandoah National Park through the Mount Marshall Fire Road available for the peaceful enjoyment of the scenic vistas, flora, fauna, hiking trails and riding trails which are the rightful heritage of all citizens.”
Norman Grimsley of Castleton retired after serving 23 years as fire tower observer for the State Division of Forestry. While working, Mr. Grimsley walked from Hope Hill to the top of Red Oak Mountain each day to man the tower and returned home the same way in the evening.
Mrs. Charles Raney in Flint Hill was in charge of the annual Heart Fund drive.
Angela Dennis was named Sweetheart at the 1974 RCHS Valentine’s Day Sweetheart dance. Christine Timbers, the previous year’s queen, placed the tiara on Angela’s head. The queen received six roses and members of her court a single red carnation each.
