The 6-6 tie at the end of the first quarter was as close as the visiting Cougars ever got. After a steal, Thomas Rector drove coast-to-coast to put the Panthers up by an 18-12 margin as the first half closed. The boys from Manassas Park managed one more basket to cut the cushion to four but the Panthers left the court in control of the game. In the third quarter, coach Gregg Waters gave a lesson on how to use bench strength, going four men deep to give his starters a rest for the stretch drive.
The Panthers romped.
With only three seconds left in the game and Rapp ahead 36-31, H. B. Wood went to the free throw line. Waters pulled his other four players back to the other end of the court, leaving just Wood with the five Cougars. He sank the first shot, upping the difference to 36-31. His second attempt fell short but Wood, a guard, beat out three forwards and two guards to capture the rebound. He was fouled imme-' diately and this time, the cool sophomore sank both with a swish of the net to make the final 38-31.
