Sometimes no matter how hard you try to escape the fates, they keep thrusting you back into the path of someone who will be important to you one day.
So when young Waldron O’Connor met a six-monthold baby named “Sammy”, he didn't quite realize that try though he might, there was no way he could avoid ending up living with her in Washington, Virginia 70 years later.
They summered together in the Berkshires, the beautiful mountain range of Massachusetts that resembles our own Blue Ridge. She was a New Yorker, a sophisticated lady who lived on Statten Island during the ret of the year.
Waldron remembers the first time he learned of her existence. “Her brother wrote to me in January of 1013 saying certain things regarding my athletic ability." he remembers. In passing, Henry mentioned that his sister Sammy would be joining them during vacations from then on. And so, Waldron recalls, they lived together during the summers. “Nobody thought anything about it in those days."
Waldron was a glamorous older man of 12, but the Berkshires were full of glamourous older men then. “Maybe I crossed my eyes at him." Sam says, not remembering the exact moment when they were first formally introduced.
Life went on.
