That “Plantars Wart” may be a callous
Many patients are treated over and over again by their doctors for a plantar wart with disappointing results. The problem may be that it is not a wart at all but a severe cystic type of callous. The wart is purely a skin problem ana can usually be treated by treating the skin alone. If the wart lies directly under a bony prominence (especially in the ball of the foot) it may not be a wart at all.
There are two types of callouses. Both are caused by excessive shearing forces applied to a bony prominence. The first type is diffuse and spread out over a small area. The other is more intense in appearance and discomfort and is about the size of a dime or smaller. The types of treatment range from placing something in the shoe to adjust the function of the foot to others such as minor procedures to correct the underlying pressure problem.
