F rank Donald has a few choice wo ids for men thinking about marrying the lady... of their choice. "Any old frizzle-britches that would say he's been married 60 years and never had a cross word with is wife is the biggest liar in seven states.”
Frank and Doris Donald sass each other back and forth but their feelings never seem to get ruffled. However, there’s one thing too serious to fight about, according to Doris — and that's MONEY: "That’s one of the biggest marriage killers there is, to fuss over money,” she says.
“We've never had a cross word over money,” Frank says. Once a month they sit down over the bills together at their dining room table. They look at what she bought. They look at what he bought. And they pay with joint accounts. Their will is made out so everything automatically goes to the survivor. It’s a 50/50 proposition, Frank says, just as the rest of married life should be.
"I don’t think that any man should rule his wife’s life." he says. “Where my right> ends, hers begin. She's got lust as much say as Ido."
The truth is that the Donalds don't have time to fight if they wanted to. Especially during the summer, they’re on the go in a van equipped with tent and luxury sleeping bags. They go to the Shenandoah at least once a month, stay in constant contact with married daughter Margaret McCauley in Colesville, Maryland, and take frequent southern jaunts as far as Florida and back and to North Georgia where Doris was bom. They've also been to the Bahamas, Toronto, and L.A. They love to travel.
While in Rappahannock, they stay busy with their various affairs with the Ruritan Club (Frank’s an officer), RSVP (They’re drivers for the Retired Senior Volunteers Program), the homemakers extension club (Doris can cook up a storm), the Amissville Baptist Church, the Capitol Chapter of Professional Secretaries International (Doris invites her former colleagues to Castleton each August for m massive cookout), the Rappahannock Library (Doris is a volunteer librarian on Thursdays) and on... and on...
