Bill Oliver of Woodville is the new representative from Stonewall - Hawthorne District on the county’s School Board, replacing Nelson Lane who resigned following his election to the Board of Supervisors in December.
“I’ve given a lot of thought to this in the last three months,” said Lane, in announcing the nomination at Monday’s board meeting. “I’ve had many communications — both written and on the telephone — from people in my district and even a few from outside,” he said, noting that those making suggestions on the appointment included teachers and former teachers. “The vast majority of them were for two individuals. Both of them are very fine people. . . I’m making this nomination not on the weaknesses of one but on the strengths (of the other),” he said, proposing Oliver as the new School Board representative.
A graduate of VPI, Oliver holds a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in animal science. He is a member of the vestry at Trinity Episcopal Church. He and his wife Lucy have two children, both students at Rappahannock County High School. Ann, a senior, is captain of the RCHS Pop Quiz Team and a semi-finalist in this year’s National Merit Scholarship competition. An honor roll
