“The kids are real excited. They just love it,” said Rappahannock Elementary School principal Maggie Piper.
She was talking about the process retired Alexandria police officer Ed Streapy was putting primary school pupils through. Streapy, now a part-time deputy with Rappahannock’s sheriffs department spent nearly a week imple-' menting a plan adopted recently by the County School Board to allow voluntary fingerprinting of the children at the elementary school.
Streapy started on February 1 and spent a day each on kindergarten and 1st grade pupils. He took longer with the younger ones, Piper explained, because he had to be “very careful” with their little hands to be sure the prints didn’t smudge and that the kids didn’t decide not to like the unusual activity. “He’s good with them,” added Piper. “He jokes with them, he has them laughing.”
