Farmers9 Market To Open
Offering the first vegetables of summer, the Small Farmers’ Market will open this Friday, June 8, in the Ice House on Main Street, Washington.
The growers expect to have peas, greens, strawberries, lettuce, radishes and fresh herb and flower plants, as well as baked goods and fresh local meat.
Bulk grains and pasta, homemade jams, jellies and vinegar, granola and cut flowers and herb® also will be for sale.
On Saturday, the market will have its grand opening, with live music, free drinks, popcorn, hamburger and salad plates, homemade sweet rolls and coffee in addition to the usual items. Grand opening festivities will last from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.
The Small Farmers’ Market is a cooperative group of orchardists, gardeners, beekeepers and bakers who have come together to market the goods they produce. Members who are also the shopkeepers, hope that this direct marketing enterprise will benefit both suppliers and shoppers.
Hours are: Friday, 3-7 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m.-2 p.m.; Sunday, 12 noon-6 p.m.

An outbreak of raccoons with rabies is progressing in Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland the District of Columbia, according to a report from the surgeon genesaL .*
Raccoons now are considered the largest carrier gf rabies since the disease in <ft$r‘Was brought tuickfr control in the fciid-1950’s.
Household pets, dogs and cats, should be immunized according to the report. For the second consecutive year, cases of rabies in cats has exceeded those in dogs.

Ann Oliver, a senior at Rappahannock High, received last week an award from the Piedmont Board of Realtors for her essay on Private Property.
The award of $50 was given by Piedmont Board vice president Sally Lea.
Miss Oliver’s essay now will compete with others in the national competition, the grand prize for which is a $1,000 bond and a trip to the National Board of Realtors’ convention in Hawaii.
Miss Oliver is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Oliver of Woodville. She also was a member of RCHS’s Pop Quiz team.

The olympic-size swimming pool at the 4-H center in Harmony Hollow will help residents beat the heat cheaply this summer, the Rappahannock County Extension Service reports.
The pool will be open to the public every day from noon to 6 p.m. beginning June 9. Cost: $1.50 for adults, $1 for ages 12 and under. '
