Atkins and Freeman, both juniors, were nominated with other students by members of the high school faculty. Selection was based on a rating sheet, in which Atkins and Freeman scored highest.
Their selection was announced last week by James T: Futrell, director of guidance at RCHS, and Mary Anne Biggs, counselor. The guidance department administered the selection process.
Boys State is sponsored by local American Legion posts; Atkins’ and Freeman’s expenses will be paid by the American Legion Post in Culpeper.
Atkins is the son of Margaret and Wilbur Lee Atkins. Freeman is the son of Charlotte and James Freeman.
Camps Provide Enrichment
In related news, the RCHS guidance department also announced attendees to summer camps that will take place in London, England, Virginia Teach, and the University of Virginia.
John “Lucky” McCoy, of Washington, and Richard Tribino of Amissville, will venture overseas in August. Their camp will include tours to inspect engineering marvels in London and Paris.
Sponsored by Virginia Tech, McCoy and Tribino were invited to the camp after outstanding participation last year at VPI’s summer camp. The 10-day tour will take place in late August.
McCoy, a sophomore, is the son of Nancy and Kent Reeve; Tribino, a freshman, is the son of Nancy and Richard Schoppet.
Four eighth-graders will attend the Virginia Teach Engineering Enrichment camp for one week this summer. They are: Jonathan Bailey of Washing
