Classmates, Family Unite

Jenkins recalled that during the most difficult times, her Conway manager, Carol Campbell, Conway classmates and her own family came to the rescue.

“My manager for Conway in Culpeper calls me about every day,” she said. “The first thing she asks is, ‘You been good today?’

“Troy (husband) and the children (T.J., 16, Connie, 10, and Mark 4) and Troy’s niece Mary Smoot have given me a great deal of encouragement. Troy’s all for it. He even likes the food that I fix.”

The coaching of Campbell, the kidding of classmates and the love of family combines to push Jenkins over the hump. By the end of May she was down to 141 pounds—10 less that she weighed when she married 18 years ago.

Today, her metamorphosis is aU but complete—in body and spirit Jenkins considers herself a different person.

“It feels good—no, it feels great,” she exuded. “It’s very exciting. I’m more self-confident; I do things I couldn’t do before.”

New Horizons

Jenkins’ enthusiasm has launched her into new horizons. This week, in Sperryville, she began to manage her own Conway class. She said the program has the endorsement of doctors in Rappahannock and Culpeper Counties.

“I’ve got 18 more pounds to go,” she smiled. “But I’ll continue to take it one day at a time.”

A few weeks ago, at a family reunion in Rome, N.Y., Jenkins’ own family didn’t recognize her when she stepped from the car. At first, they thought her 22year-old brother, Tim, had brought a girlfriend along.”

“They were surprised, and shocked,” Jenkins said, whose family knew she was losing weight. “I guess they thought, ‘Betty’s losing a
