Strawberries

Yumm! Fresh! Plump! Juicy! Mmmm! What a delicious smell! Are you hungry for some mouth-watering Rappahannock grown strawberries yet? I am, and here are a few of my favorite ways to eat them:

1. Straight off the vine.

2. Tossed with bananas.

3. Topped with a liberal helping of “real” whipped cream.

4. Served over shortbread.

5. With a large helping of homemade ice cream.

Strawberry TLC: Strawberries are highly perishable says Sharon Carter, Product Promotion, Virginia Dept, of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Even under the best storage conditions, they begin to show signs of decay after two days. To maintain quality, 1) sort through to discard moldly or crushed berries, 2) spread remaining unwashed and unstemmed berries in shallow layers (be careful not to crowd or press berries together), 3) cover and refrigerate until ready to use, 4) never wash under running water or soak since they absorb water and bruise easily; wash in a bowl of cool water using an agitation motion.

Buying Instructions: Look for berries with a full red color and a bright luster, firm flesh, and the cap still attached. The berries should be dry and clean, and usually medium to small strawberries have better eating quality than large ones. Avoid berries with large uncolored areas with large seedy areas (poor in flavor and texture), a dull shrunken appearance or softness (signs of overripeness or decay), or those with mold, which can spread rapidly from one berry to another.
