The candidates’ ages and party affiliations should be considered by voters, the Democrat said. He defined those concerns as the “unannounced issues.” Costello said the voter should ask which candidate “has the ability to stay long enough in Congress to get seniority. You don’t go up in that House and immediately have a lot of standing.
“Also, you’ve got a lot more weight if you’re a member of the majority party. (Democrats have a 269166 advantage in the House.)...So if you’ve got two candidates who can represent your philosophy, you really should support the one who is young enough to stay there a while and who can get something done.”
Although he said being a member of the House majority would be important, Costello was persistent in making the distinction between himself and the liberal elements of the Democratic Party.
“The Democratic group Pm representing is the one with the vast majority in the Virginia House and Senate. It’s the group that has proven it can take care of issues and still keep the state in the black,” he said, noting the state’s $81.2 million budget surplus
