felt faint and found breathing difficult. We called the rescue squad. His blood pressure was very low. At the hospital, Dr. Huber was alarmed at this condition, which did not improve much. He decided to send Lee by ambulance to the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) in Richmond at about 3 p.m. Dr. Huber is familiar with both the heart and infection departments of that hospital.
At MCV they discovered that Lee had lost perhaps 2 quarts of blood from an ulcer caued apparently by the prednisone, that his heart murmur exposed a latent congenital defect (IHSS) which had never affected him before, that his diaphram was at least partially paralyzed and that the lungs at the base were partially collapsed.
Through blood transfusions and other medications, his symptoms have been ameliorated, with the exception of his breathing difficulties, which have been treated with supplemental oxygen. Lee was released from MCV Wednesday, August 29 and is at home on oxygen and medications for his heart, ulcers, and serum sickness. He is weak and each day has had a fever below 100 degrees.
Our doctor-daughter Stephanie came from Boston on the 23rd and remained through the 26th, Sunday, giving important support.
In the last five weeks, we have killed five copperhead snakes within a few yards of where Lee was bitten. One was full of baby snakes.
