September is National Sight-Saving Month, and as the school year begins, teams of volunteer vision screeners from the NSPB affiliates around the country are scheduling vision checkups in the nursery and elementary schools, day care centers, at health fairs and community events.
These screenings are an important way of alerting parents to children’s eye problems. This is particularly important in a time of school budget crunches, sometimes resulting in the elimination of vital health services. Many families are also having a hard time making ends meet, and postpone routine eye checkups.
