When summer began, I didn’t know Rappahannock County even exited. Now tha* summer is ending, I have almost forgotten my native New York.
For the past thr ee weeks I have lived and worked among you here, in awe of your low crime rate, your splendid road traffic, and the abundant natural beauty here.
Many of >ou w elcomed me to the county—I mean really welcomed me making the phrase ‘Southern hospitality' more than a cliche. Some of you were interviewed or photographed by me, or perhaps you read my stones in the Rti/ipahannock Sen's.
Rut living and working among you in. the county has been a lot of fun, even if it sometimes meant working odd hours or skipping a meal oi two. One such experience I’ll.remember for a long while was owning a donkeyball game in Vaissville on August 17. My experience of mral life wras limited to Hee Haw ," I never ever heard of the sport much less covered such a game ‘ efore ! came here. Rut donkeyball is funny, and I was surprised to be laughing along with the !">0 or so spectators who watched ihe spectacle at - uart Field.
V\ at I especially remember about that evening is interviewing Randolph ('ook< who was judged the game's Most Valuable Player. After introducing myself, I began to ask him my questions, since any go.nl sports story should include an interview with the game’s Most V aluable Player—even if you only pnnt a quote or two.
Once ( ooke learned 1 was covering the game for the News, he expressed his joy and appreciation, and alternated his answers to my questions with questions of his own: “When are you gonna print this? Is my name gonna be in it'’ You really with the paper'.’" You would think he won baseball MVP honors or an Olympic gold—hut the honor and the interview were worth just as much.
