f special concern is a condition
-amblyopia or “Uusy eye” $hich must be detected and treated by the time a child is six. Ignored, the “lazy eye” does not develop normally through lack of use. The child gets along by mainly seeing out of the other eye. In later years, the condition may lead to a permanent loss of vision or even blindness in the “lazy eye.” Many older people — perhaps members of your own family — have vision problems stemming from a “lazy eye” that was not diagnosed and treated.
Today’s youngsters are lucky. The condition, if caught in time, can be corrected. Treatment is to temporarily patch the stronger eye, forcing the weaker one to develop. Eye exercises and glasses may also help.
For parents who wish to check their preschoolers’ vision, or arrange to have their vision checked through a free screening session, NSPB makes available a free, non-diagnostic home eye test kit. For more than a decade
