The candidate said he supports a constitutional admendment to balance the budget. “I think Congress needs that kind of discipline.”
The candidate discussed other issues, among them:
e Equal Rights Admendment: Slaughter said he is against ERA. “I don’t think it is correctly named,” he said.
Slaughter said he worked to revise the Virginia Constitution in 1971. “I supported a provision prohibiting discrimination. (We) also revised a number of state statutes that could be discriminatory toward women,” he added. Slaughter says equal rights should be at the discretion of Congress, via legislation, not by way of the Constitution.
In particular, Slaughter said he was opposed “as a matter of policy” to women serving in combat. “I don’t think it’s right,” he said. He also alluded to concerns about military effectiveness and the physical demands of infantry.
• Public education: “Basically, it’s a state and local responsibility,” Slaughter said. He said test scores indicated Virginia schools were improving, and teacher’s salaries should “improve” in the future, too. The federal govern(Continued
