dreaming of a successful gallery for contemporary art in a little town of just 230 souls in the middle of a rural county of only 6,000.
But they are realists and they don’t want to starve. “We have to be very creative to figure out how to do our art and live, too,” said Ms. Marshall. “This cooperative is not just a chance to pool our artistic ideas but an opportunity to share promotional ideas as well. Each artist has a set of networks out in the real world. This is a way to connect all those different networks. We want to establish a regional identity,” she explained, adding that the cooperative will promote its member artists to museums and galleries, traditional buyers of fine art, and to corporations, the newest major market on the art scene.
“Money. That’s a big impetus behind this cooperative effort,” interjected Joel Hoyer. “Not that we expect to become millionaires or even change our lifestyles. We just want to be able to keep our standard of living constant. When an artist makes money, it goes back into art and art supplies,” said Mr. Hoyer, who paints, sculpts, weaves baskets, makes jewelry — “whatever I feel like doing when I get up in the morning.”
“Creating a gallery takes time,” Ms. Marshall continued. “You have to have name recognition. Middle Street has it now, thanks to the consistent high quality of the work Dan (Lewis) exhibited here. Our cooperative will build on this. ” .
The Valentine’s Show which opens Saturday, February 8, with a public reception from 1 to 5 p.m., will continue through February 23. Regular gallery hours are 3 p.m. to 9 on Fridays, noon to 9 on Saturdays and Sundays.
