Ihe coming of fire season brought Smokey the Bear and Buck Kline, area Forester for Rappahannock, Madison, and western Culpeper counties, to the Rappahannock County Elementary School on January 28.
Students Daniel Hitt, Amy Hathaway, Derek Daczewitz, and Jennifer Sealock assisted Mr. Kline in playing a game which helped the kindergarten through third grade students realize the hazards of fire and understand fire safety rules.
“Twelve thousand acres were burned in Virginia last year,” said Mr. Kline. He discussed several ways to keep this situation from repeating itself. He said not to burn on windy or dry days, to use a lid on burning barrels, to extinguish campfires with water and dirt, to encircle the campfire with a ring of rocks, and to keep matches on a high shelf
