The artists’ cooperative will continue regular exhibitions, the same showcases for local talent from the Northern Piedmont begun by Dan Lewis. Educational programs are also planned. “And we’ll have a slide registry available,” noted Mr. Lewis, who will stay with the gallery as a co-op member. “People can come in here and look at the work of various artists. If they’re interested in commissioning a portrait, a landscape or a painting or drawing of their home, the slide registry will give them ideas on an artist to fit their particular project. It’s a lot easier than driving a couple hundred miles to visit a dozen studios scattered around four or five counties.”
Artists are generally pictured as unrealistic dreamers — starving, unrealistic dreamers. The Middle Street Cooperative members are a new breed.
They’re certainly artists, as evidenced by the impressive list of past exhibitors of their work: the Tampa Museum . in Florida, the Second Street Gallery in Charlottesville, the Museum of Culture and History in West Virginia, the Virginia Center for Creative Arts, Washington D.C.’s Franz Bader Gallery, Baltimore’s Winter Mart, New York’s Lincoln Center, American embassies in Moscow and Liberia, the Virginia Museum, the Corcoran Gallery, the International Museum of Photography, the Southeast Center for Contemporary Art, Pittsburgh’s Three Rivers Art Festival and the Times Square Show in New York.
