and the room based on that theme. I thought about doing snow or snowmen for January but that gets to be boring. So I decided to reverse the roles and go for sunshine.”
Miss Stoltzfus continued, “We started out making suns and hanging them from the ceiling of our room. I told the children that they would see snowmen and snowflakes up around the school, but our room was going to have sunshine! They loved the idea and bragged to other teachers about having sunshine in the room.”
“Then we saw slides that were actual pictures of Hawaii. We wrote a page each week in our Hawaii book called ‘Hawaii Nei.’ That means ‘My Hawaii.’ The language is different from ours. The students really got caught up in that because it’s something different. They can go home and say, I know what a keiki is and the parents won’t know what it is. (It means child.) That was fascinating for them.”
“My major goal was to have them realize that there is another world outside these mountains. The reason I chose Hawaii was because it was a place that I was familiar with and it was a place that I knew would motivate them.”
