Nelson Lane lashed out at other members of the Board of Supervisors on Monday for what he considers their gross inaction concerning a landfill site for the county.
The present landfill site, which was originally planned as a temporary facility, is almost filled and may be closed by April.
Mr. Lane’s criticism resulted in the board’s decision to hold a workshop to begin determining a landfill site. The workshop has been scheduled for Friday, February 7, at 10 a.m.
Mr. Lane said that the report generated by the Solid Waste Advisory Management Committee had “fallen onto deaf ears.” He also thinks the situation is critical because of the time factor. “Rappahannock always seems to go to the dead end before applying the brakes and seeing which way we’re going to slide.”
The committee on which he served determined three options for a landfill site:
— Establish an agreement for another county to accept trash for a minimum of five years.
— Ship the trash to the Harrisonburg Resource Recovery Facility.
