Gardening has become the number one outdoor leisure activity of Americans. Each winter gardening enthusiasts eagerly await the arrival of the rush of seed catalogues and plant lists. These catalogues and plant lists always contain a new plant, or two or three, that one can't live without.
The staff of the American Horticultural Society compiled a list of new plants for 1986 that they simply can’t live without. They want to share these exciting new plants with other American garden lovers.
Northern gardeners will delight in two new Rhododendron cultivars, one of which is hardy to -15 degrees f arhenheit. The other can survive a bone-chilling -45 degrees. Individuals with water gardens will be delighted by two beautiful tropical water lilies that are new to the market this year. Gardeners with shady areas will want to try a new mixture of outstanding impatiens cultivars that have stood the test of time. Tree-lovers with a minimum of space may want to try Whitehouse, a small-size tree that is closely related to the popular Bradford pear. For those who enjoy tasting the fruits of their labor, there is a succulent new strawberry, an outstanding new raspberry, a super-sweet corn, and a variety of vegetables.
