A hospital is a place you go after an accident, when something bad has happened, like a break in your arm - or a break in your head,” he added, with a deprecating chuckle. “ To get fixed, that’s what you go to the hospital for.”
The “fix” during his nine-month stay included electric shock therapy. His shoulders shudder involuntarily when he remembers. “I was awake. They attach little electrodes to your body, and then they shoot a current through you. I don’t imagine that the feeling is much different from being electrocuted, going to the chair. The current just isn’t as strong, so you live through it.”
Released from Western State, Robert returned to Culpeper. For six years, he held a job at a local fast food restaurant, advancing from janitor to manager. Then he suffered another “break.”
